It is cross platform and open source. It is fast, lightweight, and very stable. It supports projects, and you can work on multiple projects at the same time. It supports remote files via FTP/SFTP, HTTP, and various other ways using gnome-vfs. It supports many languages for syntax highlighting, including:

XML

HTML

XHTML

CSS

PHP

Python

C

Java

Javascript

JSP

SQL

Perl

ColdFusion

Pascal

R

Octave/MATLAB

Metapixel

A Photomosaic Generator.

nova

There is no abstract available for this page revision.

Audacity

Project Homepage: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Open source Audacity is not really a full highly complex multi-track music making machine like Cubase or Cakewalk or SoundForge etc. It is, however, a straightforward, stable, and extremely precise audio waveform editor. Very easy to use yet powerful. It will do multi-track and mixdowns, it's just doesn't have all the sound-mixer-board ins and outs of those complicated packages, which to many people is a blessing. Audacity is a precise audio scalpel, allowing you do exacting bit-level edits and splices, volume envelopes, effects, noise reduction, volume leveling, cut and paste editing, stereo mixes, etc. It will do high resolution recording, limited only by your sound card or other equipment. Great for simpler home recording projects and for the audio tracks of video projects. It's light and a quick download and has version for almost every OS, so give it a try. Highly recommended.

Home

This page unfortunately has some problems when browsing with Konqueror or Opera.
This will hopefully be fixed by Wetpaint soon.

Welcome to an Introduction to Art Tools for Linux operating systems.

This wiki aims to help artists and designers migrate from Windows and proprietary operating systems and applications to GNU/Linux, specifically Ubuntu

This website and its articles can be edited by anyone, so if you would like to contribute do not hesitate.
A goodwebsite on Open-Source Audio-Visual stuff.

blueMarine

very slow progress.

dcraw

s

Aptana

http://www.aptana.com
http://www.aptana.com/screenshots

To Install (on Ubuntu):
Instructions 1
Instructions 2 (easier) (recomended)

Aptana is a free, open source, and cross platform web-platform IDE, programmed in Java for the Eclipse IDE, though it is available as a standalone application. Recently, I opened a Japanese web site and the page displayed correctly because Ubuntu includes the Japanese fonts. Not that I can read Japanese, but it was the first time ever that I could see Japanese.

If you are familiar with Adobe Adobe Type Manager then the functionality of FontyPython should be familiar to you. With Fonty, you create a set -- much like a folder but only visible to within Fonty when it is running. FontyPython calls these sets a "pog". To use Fonty you create a pog, give it name meaningful to you and add fonts. After the pog is created, the fonts within can be turned on as a set making the fonts show up in a font menu. This offers a great advantage. Users of graphical or wordprocessing software with the addition of FontyPython won't have a font menu list that scrolls forever. Instead, the fonts become manageable as needed for all the different projects you work on.

With FontyPython we can store the extra fonts anywhere on the hard drive. In my case, I have a folder called font_morgue and it's located at the user/home level. (I named the folder font_morgue because I come from a newspaper make-ready background. Name your folder anything you like -- font-library or myFonts). Within my font_morgue are all kinds of fonts organized by folders. Some folders by the manufacturer, some by the customer, some by the seasons such as Christmas fonts.

How to get FontyPython

FontyPython is free but it is not in the Ubuntu Synaptic Repositories. You will have to download it from
https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/fontypython

Read the README included with the download. There is useful information for Ubuntu users and how to go about installation.

The limitation for version 0.2 is Fonty only works with TrueType fonts. (See the article on FontForge to convert fonts to TrueType format).

========
Now, as of the Gutsy Gibbon Release of Ubuntu, FontyPython is in the Synaptic Repositories.

Running FontyPython

FontyPython runs from a Terminal. To run you type ~$ fp

Fonty now runs in the GUI mode as the default. For other options you would type in the terminal fp --help to get a list of options and other running modes.

In the screenshot showing fonty I have created a "pog" named ASchweitzer_set, then I navigated to my font_morgue folder and with the pog selected I could add fonts to the pog. Default is the newly edited pog is NOT turned on. Notice in the screenshot above the button next to the pog for ASchweitzer_set is set black. To activate, I will click on that little square button and then the larger, rectangular button beneath that pog I click it to make the pog "alive", which turns the pog button red. The fonts are now available for font menus across my system. I can close FontyPython.

Let's say I'm using XaraLX, a vector graphics program, because I have the pog activated, the two fonts are included in the font menu. If I wish to add more fonts to my work in progress, I have to quit XaraLX, fire up fontyPython, add the needed fonts to my pog (or create a new pog), make sure the pog is active and then resume my project.

Gogh

http://www.goghproject.com/

F-Spot

A photo browser similar to picassa et al.
Allows you to browse photos by date or by assigned "tags". It is possible to assign materials, vertex color, UV coordinates and textures, but there will be improvements in those features before Wings goes 1.0. There is no support in Wings for doing animations.

Wings3d website
