It seems to be modeled most closely on the user interface of CorelDraw, which isn't a bad thing at all. The latest version (0.45 as of this writing) has added a very nice SVG blur function - you can add blur to nearly any vector object, which gives it a very nice drop shadow capability, a big advance. Some very beautiful illustrations are possible with this package.
For previous users of competing proprietary software who have back catalogs of illustrations, Inkscape's biggest drawbacks are probably a limited import functionality. It will import AI and EPS files well from certain versions of Illustrator, but not all. It does not import CDR from CorelDraw, but will import CorelDraw files that have been saved to SVG as long as they don't have bitmaps in them. Bitmaps don't seem to import period. Text will import as text, but paragraph settings will be lost, each line of text will be a separate object, which is not ideal.
Vector features are very good. Blends are especially good and versatile.
Text features are decent, but could be improved on. For instance, the paragraph and text formatting options are limited. At this time you can't, for example, change the leading (space between lines) of text, or word spacing, things that the proprietaries can do easily. Text fit to curve is a feature, but also not quite as flexible as it could be.
Despite this, a very usable and promising package, with a presently very active development team.
